Speak out for Africa

Welcome to Plan UK’s new Key Stage 1 resource for 5-7 year olds which introduces the continent of Africa and encourages pupils to think about how their voice could facilitate change there

The work is an introduction to youth advocacy and young people taking control of the decisions that affect their lives both in the UK and Africa.

The resource looks at the ‘hot seat’ as a method of asking questions and gathering information. The final lesson looks at the use of dance in African celebrations as a tool for communication.

Background:
This project evolved directly from the Young People's Commission for Africa (YPCfA), a unique project that linked 25 African schools with 25 UK schools. They collectively produced a 10 step ‘call for action’ that identified the issues critical to the lives of young Africans today. This ‘call for action’ was presented to the spouses of the G8 summit in 2005.

About Plan:
Plan is child centred. Young people were at the forefront of developing this resource. The fact that the project was presented to the G8 spouses shows the tremendous reach and potential such initiatives can have.
