Speak out for Africa

Welcome to Plan UK’s new Key Stage 3 resource for 11–13 year olds. The work introduces Africa through an in-depth study of education and health care provision.

Students are encouraged to make comparisons between the UK and Africa in terms of access, quality and scope of education and health services.

The work develops into a discussion about the UK government’s Commission for Africa and the change it hopes to bring about through improving African education and health care.

Background:
This project evolved directly from the Young People's Commission for Africa (YPCfA), a unique project that linked 25 African schools with 25 UK schools. They communicated via email and virtual forums to exchange views and build up a common body of work. They collectively produced a 10 step ‘call for action’ that identified the issues critical to the lives of young Africans today. This ‘call for action’ was presented to the spouses of the G8 summit in 2005.

About Plan:
Plan is child centred. Young people were at the forefront of developing this resource as it evolved from a global youth advocacy project (YPCfA). The fact that the project was presented to the G8 spouses shows the tremendous reach and potential such initiatives can have and the potential change that young people can affect.
