Because I am a Girl 2008: In the Shadow of War

This scheme of work accompanies the report Because I am a Girl 2008: State of the World’s Girls 2008, published by Plan. The report sheds light on the often overlooked plight of girls on conflict and post-conflict countries where the hostile environments threaten their survival and potential.

The work explores how war affects children, especially girls, why children join up to fight, the impact of war on girls, how we can join up to promote children’s rights.

Students will begin to compare their own lives to those of young people living in the developing world and learn how they can play an active role in campaigning.

The materials are developed for Key Stages 3 and 4 and consist of four lessons with accompanying resources and ‘Books not Bullets’ campaign activity. The lessons are all clearly mapped to national curriculum attainment targets.
