Timor Leste’s humanitarian disaster, and Plan’s involvement

Riots in April 2006 led to an unstable situation in Timor Leste, with thousands fleeing their homes to find a safer alternative. As is too often the case, children have suffered through no fault of their own.

Timor Leste is an island in South East Asia, divided into West Timor which belongs to Indonesia, and East Timor, which gained independence and is officially known as Timor Leste.

Following riots in April sparked by poor distribution of oil funds and dissatisfaction at the organisation of the police and army, May saw widespread violence and looting, which led to the displacement of approximately 150,000 people in and around the capital Dili.

Plan played a major role in the emergency response programme, including the purchase and delivery of food and non-food items and basic camp coordination. The largest component of Plan’s work focused around water and sanitation, providing latrines, washing facilities and life-saving drinking water.

In line with Plan’s expertise and focus on Child Centred Community Development, Plan also developed a comprehensive programme for the protection and well-being of children and their families in the camps.

It’s an ongoing crisis, but Plan continues to work with those most vulnerable, developing programmes of activities aimed at bringing a degree of normalcy and safety and Child Friendly Spaces where children can learn and play.
