Disaster relief updates

Find out about how Plan is helping children to return to a normal life after their communities were hit by disasters

Natural hazards are different from disasters.

Natural hazards are naturally-occurring physical events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods and drought.

Disasters can occur from the effects of natural hazards, or the effects of people’s irresponsible actions (like crashing a ship full of oil and letting it run into the sea). A disaster means people, animals, the environment or the economy are negatively affected on a large scale. People may lose their homes, jobs, drinking water, electricity and livelihoods. Aid agencies, governments and NGOs will step in after a disaster to try to limit the knock on problems of poverty, hunger and disease and to assist in rebuilding the communities.

Timor Leste's humanitarian disaster, and Plan's involvement
Timor Leste is experiencing a humanitarian disaster, where thousands of people have been displaced and now face food shortages and unsanitary conditions. Plan is working to improve conditions, and support children.

Plan and the humanitarian crisis in Darfur
The ongoing crisis in Darfur has put large numbers of children at great risk. Plan is helping affected children return to education.
