Because I am a Girl 2008: In the Shadow of War - 'Books not Bullets'

Plan UK have launched the second series of engaging educational resources to accompany the 2008 report, Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls 2008: In the Shadow of War.

The new lesson plans are mapped to the UK curriculum and are aimed at Key Stage 3 (recommended for 13 years and above) and Key Stage 4.

The 2007 Because I am a Girl report has been described as the most comprehensive ever published on girls around the world.

The second report, produced in 2008, explores the disturbing situation facing many of the world’s most marginalised girls in war and conflict situation. It pulls together literature and case studies highlighting the effects of war and conflict on in the world's most fragile and poorest countries.

These schemes of work accompany the report. They look comparatively at reasons why girls are enlisted to fight as soldiers, the ensuing impact on their lives and what we can all do about it to address the situation in both the developed and developing world.

Students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the situation of girls caught up in conflicts worldwide and motivated to take informed action on some of the issues raised. Students will also be able to play an active role in campaigning. The campaign Books Not Bullets offers your students a chance to make a real difference in the lives of millions of girls affected by conflicts and war.

The scheme of work contains four lesson plans for Key Stage 3 (13 years and above) and Key Stage 4. All lessons come with associated multimedia resources, downloaded from the resource centre. The scheme of work is mapped to the national curriculum.
