Because I am a Girl

Plan UK will be launching new educational resources to accompany this year's report, 'Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls 2008: In the Shadow of War'. Please check back after April 16 to download the new lesson plans aimed at Key Stages 3 and 4 and youth groups.

In May 2007, Plan UK launched ‘Because I am a Girl: The State of the World’s Girls 2007’. The report has been described as the most comprehensive ever published on girls around the world.

It explores the disturbing situation facing many of the world’s most marginalised girls. It pulls together global statistics highlighting the extent of female foeticide, early marriage, abuse and violence and the lack of education given to girls in the world's poorer countries.

These schemes of work accompany the report. They look comparatively at gender inequality and stereotypes in both the developed and developing world.

Students are encouraged to develop an awareness of the situation for girls worldwide, and the variations in access to education, life experiences and healthcare. Students will also learn how they can play an active role in campaigning.

There are two schemes of work available: Key Stages 3 and 5 (A level French). All schemes come with associated multimedia resources, downloaded from the resource centre. Both schemes of work are mapped to the national curriculum.

Please access the resources via the arrows on the left.
