Plan and the Pakistan and India earthquake

The earthquake hit Pakistan on the 8th of October 2005. About 73,000 people died (including 35,000 children) and 500,000 people lost their homes.

This was a huge natural hazard that caused a wide-scale disaster in Pakistan and India, destroying homes, businesses, schools and the transport system.

Rashid is a young boy who was caught in the earthquake, and he remembers the day the earthquake hit in vivid detail: "My friends and I rushed out, we did not understand what was happening as everything around us was falling down, houses and buildings were all gone.

"My parents were buried under the rubble, I could see them lying there. I just sat there crying. My grandparents came over and looked after me."

The earthquake destroyed Rashid's house and much of his town, and killed both his parents. This is an example of how a disaster can affect people's lives.

After a huge disaster, it is very important to get life back to normal. One of the ways this can be done is through education: children need to re-establish the routine of school to overcome the trauma. Plan is working hard to train teachers, build schools and counsel children so they can get their life back to normal.
