Darfur is an area within Sudan (just south of Egypt). This disaster is created by different groups fighting within the country. The Sudanese government has backed militia groups called Janjaweed who are killing and driving villagers from their homes, stealing cattle, destroying wells and burning buildings.
People living there have been forced to move, some going to the country next door (Chad) and others living in temporary shelters on the border between Chad and Sudan. Darfur is one of the harshest environments in the world. People have to sleep in the open air, food and clean water are scarce and the recent rains have caused animal and human waste to be washed into the water sources causing disease. All these factors put children at great risk. Many children are caught in this fighting and the Janjaweed have killed thousands of children already. Those children that have survived have often lost their parents and are living in the open air with contaminated water and little food. The children need specialist help and to return to school and get back into a normal routine: this is where Plan is helping. Plan have built new classrooms, installed water tanks in schools, trained teachers and given out textbooks to try and get the children back to education.
