| Chernor Bah in Liverpool |
| On the 7th February 2007, Jonathan Lister from Plan UK travelled up to New Heys School in Liverpool with Chernor Bah. |
|
Chernor is from Sierra Leone, and championed a Children’s Forum when he was just 15 in response to the civil war and its effects in his country. The group was the first children’s advocacy organization in Sierra Leone, and gave a voice to young people. Now 21, Chernor has always believed it is crucial that young people should be involved in the reshaping of Sierra Leone post conflict, as it was this group who suffered the most in the war which tore the country apart throughout the 1990s. It was a great opportunity for the students at New Heys to hear Chernor talk about his experiences and his work, and then ask him questions. The students were particularly interested in learning about Sierra Leone, and asked questions about the country’s resources, typical work and wages, and about the government. Chernor shared some everyday objects from Sierra Leone, like money and newspapers. As the students work through the Anti-Slavery project, Make the Link, Break the Chain, meeting with someone actually from Sierra Leone was an invaluable experience, as well as being great fun. After Chernor’s presentation and questions, he and some students were interviewed by BBC Radio Merseyside. |
