In the countries where we work, one out of five children die before the age of five, and the ones who survive often go hungry and have no chance of learning to read and write.
Plan works with children, their parents, and their community, to plan practical ways to provide many of the things we take for granted in the UK. Together we build schools, drill wells, get nurses trained and help families to better support themselves. Plan seeks to ensure that children are actively involved in the decision-making process, working with adults who have learnt to value their contribution.
Plan's work is made possible because more than a million people across the world support us through sponsoring children. Plan is also supported by the UK Government's Department of International Development, the European Union and partners and governments worldwide.
Through long-term partnerships with communities, often 10-15 years, we aim to ensure lasting improvements; giving children a better start in life and the confidence to claim the next generation for themselves. Their energy can provide the impetus to change their world.

1. What is Plan?
Plan is an international, humanitarian, child-focussed development organisation with no religious, political or governmental affiliations. We work with children, their families and communities in developing countries helping to implement projects in health, education, water and sanitation, and income-generation
Our aim is to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and add value to their lives. Our vision is to live in a world in which all children have the opportunity to realise their potential in societies, which respect people's rights and dignities.
2. Who benefits from Plan's work?
Plan is a global community focussed around the needs of children. Children are at the heart of all our work. Our projects support children, benefiting an estimated nine million children and their families through community projects.
3. How does Plan's work make a difference?
When we work in a community our attention is focussed on the benefits to the children of that community. We look at what makes life healthy and fulfilling: health, education, an adequate standard of living and the right to survive and develop.
Our work makes tangible differences because we understand the communities we work with, and, in partnership with local organisations, we collaborate with them to identify their needs. Our active support for child development over a long period of time ensures the healthy development of children within a community from pre-natal health assistance, safe delivery, through pre-school care, primary and secondary education, to and adulthood in which they can realise their full potential.
4. How does Plan choose the communities in which it works?
We choose the countries we work in by looking at international criteria like infant and maternal mortality rates, the country's wealth, government stability and their willingness to work in collaboration with us to improve children's lives. Within the chosen countries, we then look at communities where the need is the greatest and where our impact could achieve the most. The local communities themselves then choose to collaborate with us and commit to participating actively in bringing about lasting changes to their children's life.
5. How does Plan fund its work?
Individual sponsors in the UK contributed for about 77% of our funds in 2001. We also receive an increasing number of grants from charitable trusts and foundations, valuable financial support from corporate partnership, aid agencies and individuals interested in supporting specific projects.

6. How does Plan show where the money goes?
Plan is an accountable and transparent humanitarian organisation. We publish consolidated financial statements covering our operations. These statements, which are prepared according to International Accounting Standards (IAS), cover the fundraising side of the organisation and the use of funds in programme countries. The statements are audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers and clearly show how Plan spends the funds raised.
